I don't see it like that. The cut can create its own motion, and much quicker than moving the camera. The amount of multiple fast cuts I've seen that can leave me far more breathless than one moving shot...
<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">I don't know why you quoted my first example which was about intentionally avoiding motion. The point you make doesn't invalidate my example, but rather just adds to list as another effective use of the cut.

I do understand the point you were trying to make. I agree, those quick cuts can be effective. But of course, like anything else, can also be overused.

Also, I was speaking about motion literally. As in literally moving the camera within a shot thereby creating actual motion. Spatial motion. The motion you speak of is rhythmic, not spatial. Rapid cuts that happen so quickly as to create a fast paced rhythm whether the camera is moving or not.

my point wasn't about rhythm, although I agree with what you say about that
My point was that using cuts can give a sense of motion; if you cut between moving shots (for example) it can heighten the impression, rather than lessen it, as you suggest.

and it's parloe, not parole

Hey, I was born during a montage! I know, because I've seen it.

RE: The Montage.

I know a lot of great films have used the "M" word. But i still think that it's trite, lazy, and bad, bad, bad, bad, way of exposition.

We don't need no stinking montage.

Always fade out in a montage..
if you fade out it seems like
more time has passed in a montage.

Part II of my trilogy *was* almost 90% montage (although I didnt realise the significance at the time) - thats 35 minutes of montage - hard for anyone.

I have no problem with montages, but this needs a little editing.
